According to RI General Law § 5-20.6-4  Disclosure – Provision to buyer...

In Rhode Island it has to be a written form called and Agency Disclosure form.  Click here to see what one looks like

This form has to be given to the listing agent on every property the buyer views with that agent.

In the Agency Form that agent can be either a

Listing Agent or

Buyer's Agent or

Seller's Subagent

The form also explains Responsibility of the Seller & Buyer

It also has a Seller & Buyer Acknowledgement

The form goes in detail explaining the different choices the buyer has and what relationship the buyer will have with that agent.

The Agency form also explains  Disclosed Dual Agency

and how a separate form has to be signed by the buyer, seller and agent to enter into a dual agency.

It is in your Best Interest to Ask for this Agency  FORM When you meet the real estate Agent before revealing anything to that agent.

In Rhode Island the only way to have a buyer agent relationship is for you have to have a written buyers contact otherwise by RI  law that agent represents the seller.

§ 5-20.6-2  Agency status. – (a) In the practice of real estate brokerage, real estate agents are considered to be the agent of the seller of real estate unless there is an agreement in writing to the contrary between the buyer(s) and agent, and the agreement is disclosed to all parties.

Rhode Island Agency Form IS NOT a Buyer Agent Contract

You want an agreement that actually states what a buyers agent is going to do for you.
